Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Intern of the Year 27 January 2026 Congratulations to Dr Marrion, who was recently awarded the Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) Schneider Award for Intern of the Year for 2025. The award is presented to a first-year doctor who displays great care and compassion in the practice of medicine, based on nominations by our consultants, registrars, allied health and nursing staff. Consistently nominated each term in 2025, Dr Marrion was recognised for exceeding expectations across every domain, with his leadership and communication skills standing out in particular. SCGH General Surgery Consultant Dr Hodder said that after being a consultant for 20 years, he has not come across a better intern and Dr Marrion was clear candidate to win the prize. "Dr Marrion had always made extra time to do extra teaching for the medical students and nurses, and all allied health members immensely enjoyed having him around," Dr Hodder said. "...

  • Prof Cheah, Clinical Haematologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital
New treatment options inspire innovative medical research 22 August 2024 A passion for driving increased access to the latest treatments for WA patients with lymphoma and other blood cancers has guided Professor Chan Cheah in his first investigator-initiated trial, LEVERAGE. LEVERAGE is a phase I/II clinical trial looking into the potential of non-chemotherapy treatment for advanced stage follicular lymphoma patients. Due to the significant undesirable side effects of chemotherapy, a combination of 3 non-chemotherapy medications – obinutuzumab, lenalidomide and venetoclax – is being reviewed to assess whether they can be part of a treatment that is effective and has a more favourable side effect profile. Prof Cheah, Clinical Haematologist at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital, said that the idea of the project came to him when he was out for a run in 2016. Interim results from the study have been positive with 91 per cent of the 45 patients responding ...

Highlights included opening the first oncology unit in the state, commissioning the opening of SCGH’s G Block Theatres and being part o...

Electronic prescribing implementation 12 June 2024 The North Metropolitan Health Service (NMHS) is in the process of implementing electronic prescriptions (external site)in the Outpatient Clinics at Sir Charles Gairdner (SCGH) and Osborne Park Hospitals (OPH). This project will align the SCGOPH care group with the other health service providers in Western Australia, providing patients with access to electronic prescriptions across the state. Instead of receiving a paper prescription, patients can instead opt to receive their prescription via SMS or email. This can then be filled at their local pharmacy. Please note, SCGH and OPH onsite Outpatient Pharmacies are currently unable to receive electronic prescriptions and must still be provided with normal paper prescriptions at present. Patients can also speak to their local community pharmacist about registering for an Active Script List (ASL) which allows their scripts to be stored in a ce...
  • CAC members Joanne and Elizabeth
Shining a spotlight on the Consumer Advisory Council 13 May 2024 As part of Patient Experience Week, we’re highlighting the important role that our Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH) Consumer Advisory Council (CAC) play in shaping the patient experience. CAC act as a link between consumers and hospital staff. They apply a consumer’s lens and voice to decision-making to help support the development of policies and strategies. CAC Deputy Chair Elizabeth Mills said the CAC helps to support the patient experience. "Whether good or bad, the patient experience is very important as it helps the hospital to enhance the services it provides,” Elizabeth said. Elizabeth’s road to the CAC began through personal experience at SCGH and she felt passionate about having her voice heard. After being an inpatient at SCGH with a broken foot and having difficulties getting to a bathroom, Elizabeth decided joining the CAC was a pathway for her to...
