Moments That Matter (Dementia/Delirium Program)

Patients living with dementia or delirium are experiencing improved comfort and wellbeing through the Moments That Matter program at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital.

This program is supported by dedicated volunteers who provide companionship and assistance to patients with cognitive impairment.

Volunteers offer a friendly face and emotional support at a time when patients may feel confused or distressed.

This person centred approach helps reduce anxiety in an unfamiliar environment and can play a meaningful role in a patient’s recovery.

Responsibilities may include:

  • engaging patients in conversation about current events and everyday topics,
  • learning about each patient’s background and preferences,
  • ensuring hearing aids are worn and working, and that reading glasses are clean and within reach,
  • assisting with mealtime tasks such as opening containers, cutting food, completing menu cards and helping patients sit out of bed,
  • supporting healthy sleep/wake routines by opening blinds, encouraging gentle activity, and minimising distractions during rest periods, and
  • participating in activities organised by Occupational Therapy Assistants.

Requirements include having an interest in, or experience with, older adults or people living with dementia; respect for the beliefs, values and cultures of others and strong communication skills and a compassionate approach.

Join us in making a genuine difference for some of our most vulnerable patients. Your presence can bring comfort, connection, and calm when it is needed most.

Shifts are available 10.30am to 12.30pm, Monday to Friday.
