Waiting for a donation – a perspective from the other side 28 July 2022 As DonateLife Week 2022 comes to an end we want to introduce you to Nicole, an inspiring patient waiting for not one, but two organ donations. Nicole has spent almost her whole life living with Type 1 Diabetes, a rollercoaster ride that she knew would one day probably end in her needing a kidney transplant. In a whirlwind of events in 2021 that day came much earlier than she and her family had hoped. “We knew that the trajectory indicated that eventually I would need an organ transplant,” she said. “But an infection in my blood and the need for me to have a long period of strong antibiotics certainly sped that process up. “I try to look at it as a little lotto win for myself, because right now I’m young enough that they will do both a kidney and a pancreas transplant at the same time. “Imagine a life without diabetes.” After receiving the news ... -
Living with COVID 29 June 2022 We are happy to announce that as part of the move to “Living with COVID” Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital has returned our COVID wards to normal operations. That means we have returned to full bed capacity at Charlies, and we are also still able to treat COVID patients in a dedicated ward. -
Celebrating our dedicated staff! 21 June 2022 Rachel Hogg, Acting Clinical Nurse Specialist on our G73 Covid Ward has been recognised as the Sir Charles Gairdner Employee of the Month of May for the fantastic work she has done to create a successful nursing team which supports the hospital management of COVID patients in collaboration with the SCGH COVID Response Team. Rachel was nominated by her colleagues for her commitment to her team and patients, exemplary leadership and compassionate and innovative approach to providing patient-centred care with the highest level of safety. Her colleagues say “Rachel has been the backbone of the G73 Covid ward over the past few months. She is constantly showing kindness and empathy to her nursing workforce and patients. Aboriginal health practitioners in Western Australia 17 June 2022 The Aboriginal Health Practitioner (AHP) is a new role soon to be established within WA Health. Following a robust consultations process, negotiations are now underway to classify the new role to a relevant industrial agreement which is due to be finalised in October. The Aboriginal Health Practitioner Project commenced in August 2021 as part of the recommendations 3a and 25 of the Sustainable Health Review (SHR) to implement the AHP profession as a priority. The State Government is also supporting the project having allocated $3.66 million over 2 years to help establish the position. Key stakeholders including the Aboriginal Health Policy Directorate (AHPD) led by Wendy Casey, Directors of Aboriginal Health within each Health Service and the Office of the Chief Medical Officer (OCMO) have come together to support the establishment of the AHP role within WA Health. Hear from our Board Chair Professor David Forbes 16 June 2022 Professor Forbes speaks openly about the value of our outstanding staff and about NMHS being a values-based organisation to make us strong into the middle of the 21st century. “I think respect is the core. Respect is required to deliver good care, but it also involves teamwork.
