Mental Health Services (SCGH)

Sir Charles Gardiner Hospital Mental Health Services (SCGH MHS) provides specialist secondary and tertiary functions that incorporate the following services:

  • SCGH Mental Health Unit
  • SCGH Mental Health Observation Unit
  • SCGH Day Procedure Unit (Isdell)
  • SCGH ED Consultancy Liaison
  • Self Harm and Crisis Counselling Service (SHACCS)

SCGH Mental Health Unit

SCGH Mental Health Unit (MHU) comprises 30 authorised acute beds for the Lower West catchment of NMHS. These beds are separated into secure and open wards with medical, nursing and allied health services including in reach services such as alcohol and other drug services, GP services and podiatry services.

SCGH Mental Health Observation Unit (MHOA)

SCGH Mental Health Observation Area (MHOA) is located adjacent to the SCGH Emergency Department (ED). This unit provides 48 to 72 hours mental health assessment and treatment for people who present to ED to reduce the time mental health consumers spend in ED. This area can facilitate eight consumers with six beds and two recliner chairs.

SCGH Day Procedure Unit (Isdell)

SCGH Day Procedure Unit (Isdell) provides Electro-Convulsive (ECT) and repetitive Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (rTMS) provides treatments to both inpatients and outpatients. This can be in the form of a treatment phase or ongoing maintenance phase.

Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Service

Psychiatric Consultation Liaison Service works within the SCGH Emergency Department and in SCGH medical and surgical wards to provide rapid response and assessment for adult and older adult consumers presenting with mental health issues to reduce their time in the Emergency Department and general wards and facilitate appropriate pathway through mental health services (inpatient or community).

Self Harm and Crisis Counselling Service (SHACCS)

Self-Harm and Crisis Counselling Service (SHACCS) is for patients presenting to SCGH Emergency Department with self-harm. This team works closely with the ED Psychiatric Liaison Service.
