Dietetics and Nutrition

Eat Well Stay StrongThe Dietetics and Nutrition Department provides specialised assessment and management of nutritional and dietary issues for inpatients and outpatients at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. Our Dietitians also work closely with our Dietary Assistant and Catering Department to ensure the specialised dietary requirements of patients are met.

We provide a range of inpatient services across all ward areas. 

Our team of Dietitians also provide outpatient services in the following specialties:

  • Bariatrics (restricted to patients undergoing bariatric surgery at SCGH)
  • Cancer in the Comprehensive Cancer Centre
  • Cystic Fibrosis
  • Neurology
  • Renal
  • Diabetes including the Young Adult Diabetes Service (YADS)
  • Gastroenterology and Hepatology

Outpatient Clinic Eligibility 

Referrals to the Dietitian are only accepted under the following circumstances:

  1. The patient is currently under the care of a Medical Consultant in a specialist outpatient clinic located at SCGH;
  2. The patient is currently seen by or has an upcoming appointment booked with the referring Medical Consultant in their specialist outpatient clinic located at SCGH;
  3. The patient has a valid referral to the Dietitian (is referred by the Medical Consultant within the last 12 months) and
  4. The patient resides in the SCGH catchment

Please note that no external or GP referrals are accepted.

There is no capacity for general dietary or weight management advice in our outpatient clinics. Patients requiring these services can access the following:

  • Osborne Park Hospital Nutrition and Dietetics Outpatient Clinic. This service is only available to patients with a written referral from their GP and who live within the NMHS catchment. Your GP can download the Dietetics referral form (Word).
  • A private practising dietitian in the community. Go to the DAA website (external site) to search for a private dietitian in your local area. Medicare rebates (external site) may apply for patients with chronic conditions and complex care needs. A referral from the GP is required
  • The Nutrition Clinic (PDF) (Edith Cowan University, Joondalup)
