Hepatology Department and Liver Transplant Service

The Hepatology Department is a quaternary unit servicing SCGH inpatient and outpatient liver disease as well as the state referral centre from other hospitals for complex liver disease that may need special intervention or transplantation.

We see about 200 outpatients weekly. We consult, diagnose and manage general hepatology conditions and manage long term chronic liver disease. We are also the viral hepatitis management centre, and  referral centre for Hepatocellular cancer (HCC) being considered for transplant.

Other services include Fibroscan, Remote consultation, Endoscopic services (esp. for chronic Liver Disease), ERCP and hepatology oncology for HCC and Cholangiocarcinoma. The Liver Transplant Unit at SCGH is the state referral and treatment centre for The Western Australian Liver Transplant Service (WALTS).

SCGH has performed more than 460 Liver Transplants since 1994. The unit officially added Cholangiocarcinoma Transplantation to its’ services in July 2018. We participate in a range of clinical trials and translational research activities that inform our practice. Our referral base draws from within SCGH, referring tertiary hospitals or from private physicians and GP’s.
