Nursing Research Unit

Philosophy

The Nursing Research Unit supports the philosophy of the Nursing Service.

Mission

Our mission is to assist nurses to conduct research that facilitates the delivery of patient care that is research based.

Goal

The Nursing Service of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in collaboration with Curtin University of Technology and other tertiary institutions, as appropriate and will become recognised for its excellence in patient care and nursing research through its research activities, publications and conference presentations.

Objectives

  • The Nursing Research Unit supports and conducts nursing research that facilitates the delivery of patient care.

  • The nursing research unit supports nurses in their endeavours through conducting literature searches, assistance with writing proposals, facilitating data collection and analysis, assistance publishing research findings, organising forums for discussion of research findings, providing support that facilitates evidenced based practice and providing education support in regard to research. In addition, the nursing research unit will assist other health professionals involved in multidisiplinary research projects.

Teaching

Formal and informal educational sessions on nursing research based on both quantitative and qualitative research methods.

Supervision of Honour’s and Master’s students research projects in collaboration with academic staff from adjoining universities.

Bev O'Connell is a senior lecturer in the School of Nursing, Curtin University of Technology, Perth. She has a collaborative research appointment with Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and is conducting clinical research. She teaches at Curtin University in the areas of nursing assessment, nursing theory and nursing research at both the undergraduate and postgraduate areas.

Nurse Researcher:
Kay O'Driscoll - RN, BSc (H Prom) MHM

Kay O'Driscoll is a Nurse Researcher in Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. She has expertise in Nephrology and Organ Transplantation as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. Kay works collaboratively with Curtin University of Technology and is conducting clinical research.

Jeanne Young - RN, BSc (H Prom)(Hons)

Jeanne Young is a Nurse Researcher at SCGH. Her area of expertise lies in instrument design and quantitative analysis. Jeanne previously worked in Educational research at Curtin University of Technology and Edith Cowan University before undertaking clinical research in nursing.
