Patients' Rights & Responsibilities
Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital values its position of trust and high standing in the community.
A formal Charter of Patients’ Rights and Responsibilities has been developed and endorsed by the hospital in the interests of all those in our care.
As a patient of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital you have the right to:
- be treated with respect for your dignity, beliefs and right to privacy
- high standards of care consistent with your needs and the resources available to meet them
- information to provide you with a clear understanding of your illness, the options for teatment and the likely consequences
- the services of an interpreter provided free by the hospital
- decline treatment or investigations after accepting responsibility for the consequences
- decide whether or not to participate in research - although as this is a teaching hospital, your co-operation will be appreciated
- have complaints about individual staff members or services dealt with promptly and effectively
- have access to services which are in short supply determined according to need
As a patient of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital you have the responsibility to:
- co-operate with staff during your treatment in order to aid a speedy recovery
- inform yourself about your health problems and take care of your health as far as you are able
- accept the consequences of your own decisions on health matters
- not unreasonably refuse to participate in student teaching
- direct any criticisms of the hospital to a staff member so that appropriate steps can be taken to remedy any problems
- respect the dignity of hospital staff members, other patients and visitors and their right to a safe environment
- be considerate in your arrangements with the Hospital
