Mission Statement

The Department of Radiology of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is driven by its purpose to provide imaging services for every other clinical department and division throughout the Medical Centre. A similar service is also provided to a multitude of non-clinical site users (Research, Forensics, etc.). The Department is strongly committed to a successful partnership with the medical staff of the Hospital for the benefit of the patient. Our philosophy aims to achieve the best results through teamwork.
With a staff of approximately 140 we perform nearly 120,000 examinations per year. Our strength lies in the range and flexibility of the service we are able to provide as well as the level of excellence embodied within the expertise within these personnel as well as the quality of the equipment. This allows us to respond to the needs of our colleagues throughout the campus both in terms of their current requirements as well as any changes that may occur as they evolve. The department itself is inherently technology-driven and our intrinsic aspiration is to maintain and continue to improve on the quality of our imaging product by maintaining the standards of our image delivery on par with standards expected by this community. This requires a maintenance and active recruitment of personnel and equipment of excellence to maintain and improve on our performance of delivery of service.
Staff
The Radiology Department is the largest department within the hospital. There are very few patients who do not require some type of imaging during or after their stay with us in hospital. We have a staffing level of approximately 140 people. These include Radiologists (the consultant doctors who read the x-rays and perform the procedures), Fellows (senior registrars), Registrars-in-Training, Radiographers (or Medical Imaging Technologists) who take the images and are responsible for the equipment, nursing, clerical and HSA (support staff/orderlies).
Education and Research Activities
Research:
Research in interventional radiology is particularly linked to vascular disease and to the Liver Transplantation Unit. Many research projects are being conducted in the MRI unit, focusing on functional brain imaging, pulmonary artery imaging and imaging of musculoskeletal disease.
Clinical audits currently include
- Efficacy of Angioplasty & Stents in Peripheral Vascular Disease.
- Vertebroplasty Patient Follow Up.
Education:
The Department of Radiology is closely linked with the University Department of Western Australia and CTEC for its under- graduate and postgraduate medical education, nursing and allied health education professionals.
- Regular Radiology staff development tutorials.
- Ongoing registrar tutorials
- Ongoing professional development by staff Radiologists
- Active collaboration with regular meeting to discuss cases with the Departments of Respiratory Medicine, Neurosurgery, Oncology, Radiation Oncology, Liver Transplant Team, Haematology, Neurology, Vascular Surgery, Dialysis Team and Gastroenterology.
- The department partakes in the development of the Royal Australian New Zealand College of Radiology (RANZCR) accreditation procedure
- Film Library for teaching, referral and research purpose
Other Information
How to Order Investigations:
Different processes exist for requesting different examinations. It is vitally important that all the boxes on the appropriate request form are completed, especially the clinical history, name and page number of the requesting doctor. Examinations cannot be performed without a request form. This is a medico-legal requirement before any procedure can be performed.
