Orthopaedics
To assess, plan and implement treatment in order to improve or maintain a person’s optimal function following bone trauma (e.g. MVA), elective surgery (e.g. Joint replacement, shoulder surgery) or disease processes (e.g. osteoarthritis). These areas include self-care and domestic activities of daily living.
OT role:
- Education regarding precautions following hip, knee & elbow replacements or shoulder surgery
- Self-care retraining, (e.g. shower hob/bathboard transfer training, dressing training)
- Education on donning/doffing post-operative devices (i.e. Shoulder abduction slings)
- Outpatient upper limb assessment, splinting and treatment in the Hand and Upper Limb Clinic
- Education & retraining using adaptive equipment
- Wheelchair provision and training
- Education on joint protection, work simplification, energy conservation techniques
- Education regarding fall prevention strategies
- Seating and pressure care
- Providing psychological support (especially following multi-trauma injuries)
- Referral for home visits to assess wheelchair access in the home, installations and equipment provision
