Gastro-Renal CSU

Services We Offer

The activities of the Gastro Renal CSU centre around its 4 core clinical activities and are managed within a range of outpatient, day facility and inpatient beds. Medical and nursing staff work closely together to provide direction for their Departments, implement practice changes and contribute to the strategic directions of the CSU. A comprehensive service is provided across General Surgery, Liver and Renal Transplantation, Renal Medicine & Dialysis, Urology and Gastroenterology.

General Surgery:

Considerable expertise is provided in the areas of upper gastrointestinal, hepatobiliary, colorectal and transplantation surgery. SCGH is the only public hospital in WA that offers gastric banding treatment for bariatric patients. Radioactive therapy is provided for patients with thyroid cancers. A 6-bed specials area offers excellent support for patients who are acutely ill, from a wide range of both medical and surgical specialities, by providing 1:2 nurse patient ratio.

Liver Transplantation:

The Gastro Renal CSU provides a base for the Western Australian Liver Transplantation Service. A medical and surgical director manage the service. The Department of Gastroenterology and Hepatology is the main tertiary referral centre for liver disease and viral hepatitis. It participates in national and international scientific meetings and provides both collaborative and individual research papers. The viral hepatitis service provides an inpatient, outpatient and external service and its service delivery is in a shared care model with general practitioners.

Kidney Transplantation:

The collaboration of the Department of Renal Medicine and the WA Liver & Kidney Surgicaal Transplant Service enables the Gastro-Renal CSU to provide a service of kidney transplantation. This covers transplantation from living donors as well as cadaveric donors. It works in collaboration with the Renal Medicine Department from Royal Perth Hospital through multidisciplanary meetings of the WA Kidney Transplant Service. Approximately 45 Kidney transplantations are performed per year.

Renal Medicine and Dialysis:

A comprehensive service is provided to patients requiring care in all aspects of renal medicine and surgery. The haemodialysis unit treats over 20 patients at a time and the continuous ambulatory peritoneal service enables patients to manage their dialysis in the community with ongoing related support. Renal transplants are performed and surgeons also undertake access work for dialysis. There is regular involvement in multicentre drug trials and also individual research projects.

Urology:

The urology service incorporates diagnostics, flexible cystoscopy and surgery to deal with acute urological disorders such as cancer, retention and ureteric stones. Radioactive therapy is provided to patients with urological cancers in conjunction with the Radiation Oncology department.

Gastroenterology:

The Gastroenterology department provides a range of specialist services for patients with gastrointestinal problems. A full range of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures is performed in the Endoscopy Suite. SCGH is the only public hospital able to provide the Capsule Endoscopy technique for the diagnosis of small bowel pathology and the only hospital in WA able to use Mother/Baby scope technology for diagnosis and treatment of bile duct disorders.
