RESEARCH GOVERNANCE UNIT

Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital has a three-tiered system of ethical and scientific review for all research applications, consisting of a Human Research Ethics Committee, Scientific sub-committees and Research Governance review.

The Research Governance Unit provides an independent systematic evaluation of research applications, which ensures the safety, and minimises the risk, for the patient, the researcher and the institution.

Research governance is a framework through which the institution is accountable for the scientific quality, ethical acceptability and safety of the research they sponsor or permit. It is a risk management activity that facilitates standards of research practice, and allows for a more detailed and institutionally relevant review of research applications.

RESEARCH GOVERNANCE FRAMEWORK

The research governance framework implemented at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in July 2006 provides the institution with further accountability for the ethical, scientific and safety of the research it conducts. It allows for separation of the research governance issues from the task of ethical review.
