About Us

There are a number of Clinical Nurse Consultants (CNC) at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital who provide a clinical consultancy service to all clinical areas based on their field of expertise. Primarily, this includes clinical support and advice, but also in education, policymaking, and research.

Acute Pain

The CNC works closely with the anaesthetist as part of the Acute Pain Service in the review of patients with advanced acute pain therapies particularly in post-operative pain management. The CNC also acts as a clinical resource to staff; provides education to all disciplines; and conducts research and quality activities in this field.

Alcohol and Drug Liaison

This role provides assessment, intervention and referrals for patients admitted as a result of alcohol and other drug (AOD) related problems. In addition, it is responsible for the implementation, facilitation and co-ordination of education and training for staff in all aspects of AOD issues. The role is a link between the hospital and relevant agencies across the state of WA.

Continence

The CNC provides assessment of patients with continence problems, initiating programs to restore or manage urinary and faecal continence problems. Inclusive is support and education to patients, families and staff on continence matters including advice on continence aids and appliances. The CNC is also an active team member of the Aged Care Continence service.

Diabetes

This role incorporates best practice in diabetes management, and has established guidelines in the acute care setting, providing expert advice to staff, patients and families. In addition, the role is an important resource to internal and external organisations within the North Metropolitan Health Services.

The Infection control program aims to influence and guide clinical practice to prevent and control the spread of infection, through the design and implementation of effective hospital wide activities, education programmes and policies. The CNC is part of hospital based Infection control team.

Intravascular Therapy

This CNC is a clinical resource for Intravascular Therapy, the role offers education and training in the management of Intravascular therapy to patients, their families and multi-disciplinary staff. The role also includes insertion and follow-up management of PICC lines as well as advice and care of a range of other IV devices.

Palliative Care

The CNC works within a team to provide holistic assessment and management of symptoms, to people with diseases not responsive to curative therapies. Services encompass symptom control, support and education of the patient, their carers and staff; discharge planning; and bereavement support.

Psychiatry

The CNC provides a service aimed at best practice in the provision of mental health nursing strategies for all patients with a mental illness or mental health issues. More specifically the role encompasses mental health assessment, planning of care, the provision of complex mental health interventions and liaison with external facilities. The role also includes the provision of education for health professionals, patients and patient families.

Stomal Therapy

The Stomal Therapy CNC provides pre and post-operative teaching and management of patients with stoma formation, but also management of patients with draining wounds or fistulae. The role includes education of patients, their families, and staff, and includes ongoing outpatient support. In addition, patients with stomas are connected with the state Ostomy Association prior to discharge from hospital to facilitate their access to supplies and support networks.

Wound Management

The CNC Wound Management provides: assessment and advice on wound management problems including treatment options and multidisciplinary liaison; education on wound care, and prevention and management of pressure ulcers; and coordination of pressure ulcer surveillance. The CNC is also an integral part of the SCGH Leg Ulcer Clinic.
