Charlies speech pathologists scoop the pool at Speech Pathology Australia awards
Two of seven national awards recognising excellence among Australian Speech Pathologists have been won by Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital Speech Pathologists.
Head of Department Kim Brookes from Wembley was presented with the Recognition of Service award and Jessica Molloy received the Rookie of the Year prize.
Kim Brookes has dedicated 14 years to assisting patients at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. As well as helping patients with communication disorders she specialises in swallowing disorders.
Head of Department since 2004, Mrs Brookes said: “It’s a thrill to help people regain their ability to eat and drink.”
“I am lucky to work with a group of generous, innovative and dynamic therapists who always put the patients’ needs first. Our ambition as a group is to become a centre for excellence in patient care, education and research,” she said.
Mrs Brookes’ award recognises her work as WA Speech Pathology Australia Continuing Professional Development Leader and Executive member and her role as Mentor and Spokesperson on Dysphagia, a condition where sufferers experience difficulty swallowing.
Floreat resident Jessica Molloy, who began her career at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital in late 2008, was awarded ‘Rookie of the Year’ for ongoing valuable service to Speech Pathology Australia.
Of particular note was her contribution to educating peers and the general public about Speech Pathology services and the importance of its role within health.
Ms Molloy said it was an honour to receive the award for her contribution.
“Being part of the WA Branch executive provides an excellent opportunity to be involved in and contribute to the association, and working at Charlies goes hand in hand with that. The Speech Pathology department here at Charlies is a great place to work because it is active in all areas of the association.”
