ABC Radio’s ‘Dry July’ team leads Australia in raising funds for Cancer Patients
720 ABC Perth Mornings show host Geoff Hutchison has led his Dry July team to number one ranking mid way through the national fundraising event which is set to benefit Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital’s cancer patients to the tune of tens of thousands of dollars.
‘Dry July’ raises funds for hospitals across Australia through the sponsorship of people who commit to abstain from alcohol throughout July. The event is now in its second year but this is the first year it is running in WA. Money raised by West Australians will go to the Radiation Oncology Department at SCGH and the tally currently stands at $78,000.
Geoff Hutchison said he was delighted with the strong support he’d received from his loyal listeners who have helped him raise over $13,000.
“I think the 67 listeners who’ve joined my group have put in a spectacular effort to not only to make it to the half way mark without a drink but also to raise so much money to claim the number one spot,” Geoff said.
“I do enjoy having the odd glass, particularly at weekends and despite the fact that yes, I really do miss it, who cares, it is hardly a sacrifice. Not when the cause is such a good one and the health benefits are becoming increasingly apparent,” he added.
Executive Director of Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital and Dry July participant Dr Amanda Ling congratulated Geoff on his effort and for being a strong voice for Dry July.
“Geoff’s commitment together with the support of 720 ABC Perth listeners has seen him raise more money than any other high-profile ambassador across Australia and we are delighted to have his support,” said Dr Ling.
“The 3,000 patients treated by Radiation Oncology each year receive the very best of treatment and this money will be used to create more comfortable and uplifting areas in which to wait,” she said.
The makeover of waiting areas is being planned in such a way that items purchased can be transported to and incorporated into the second stage of the Cancer Centre which will bring all cancer services under one roof when completed on site in late 2011.The expanded Comprehensive Cancer Centre will be seven times the size of the existing centre. Work on the $65 million project is set to start in 2010.
