The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery provides a general trauma and elective orthopaedic service.

Together with the University Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, there is a special expertise in the treatment of musculoskeletal tumours, bone allografts, joint replacements and sports medicine. The unit is staffed by dedicated surgeons who all have subspecialty training in their areas of interest, with experience working interstate and internationally.

Research activities include on going projects including clinical trials and Cochrane meta-analyses. Examples include ongoing involvement by the orthopaedic wards in the international Pulmonary Embolism Prevention Trial and AOANJRR CRISTAL Study.

The Department is committed to the training and teaching of orthopaedic surgery to both undergraduate and postgraduate medical, nursing and allied health students. This includes the supervision of Royal Australasian College of Surgeon trainees (Orthopaedic Surgery) and 3 internationally recognised post fellowship subspecialty training positions (Musculoskeletal oncology and reconstruction, Lower limb arthroplasty and reconstruction, and Upper Limb and trauma).
